    Castle of Montesquieu

Feudal castle built by the lords of Sant Cristau, who then took the name of Montesquieu, dates back to 1080. The central dungeon houses the former home of the lord which was later backed a vaulted room which was the subject of a restoration. The enclosure wall to protect the whole measures nearly 12 meters high. A breathtaking view awaits you!

Description

At the parking lot, head up into the village and take the road towards Villelongue-dels-Monts on the left. Take the first right onto Rue Saint Christophe, then continue straight.

  1. 200 meters further, take a left onto a path alongside a house and then arrive at the botanical trail on the right. At the end of this street, take the botanical trail. 500 meters ahead, you'll encounter signs for the "Jardins de Marti Fort" guiding you to remarkable structures. Continue along the trail winding through the terraces.
  2. 50 meters later, a viewpoint of the village and castle will captivate you. Follow the marked trail to the "Rocher Villelongue".
  3. Take a right and ascend towards the DFCI track "AL7". Turn right and follow this easy path.
  4. At 100 meters into the bend, you'll spot a CAIRN (a small mound of stones; tradition dictates that each hiker adds a stone).
  5. 200 meters further, on the right, an alley of pine trees invites you. Take this passage to discover "le Pech Redoun". This 180° observatory allows the Communal Fire Committee to monitor the territory. Take again on the DFCI track, and you'll find a marking post : this is the botanical trail that will lead you back to the village.
  6. Please note that the descent is technical. At mid-slope, you can observe the lime kiln and its ignition duct.
