    History

    Catalan Boat

Catalan boats were used for net fishing of sardines and anchovies along the Catalan and Spanish coasts. In Collioure in 1900, there were 120 Catalan boats dedicated to sardine ("sardinal") and anchovy ("anxove") fishing. You can still find them along the coastline, lovingly restored by enthusiasts.

    Argelès Photo Nature Exhibition

Created in 2009 by the town of Argelès-sur-Mer, Argelès Photo Nature – Enfants de la Mer offers over six months of outdoor exhibition featuring around a hundred giant photographs along the seafront promenade in Argelès-sur-Mer, which attracts over a million visitors each year.

In 2020, the exhibition focuses on bears, with photographic perspectives accompanied by watercolor paintings and monumental sculptures. Issues related to climate change are also explored through stunning exhibits on the Arctic and coral reefs.

Description

  1. From the Port Parking, head to the far right of the parking lot to access the docks via a ramp. If you're walking, you can also reach the docks directly via the stairs.
  2. The first part of this walk takes you along the Vasco de Gama, Christophe Colomb, and Jacques Cartier docks. Among the boats moored at the port, take the time to notice the Catalan boats, which are a source of pride for sea lovers.
  3.  As you stroll between the shops and the docks, you will also discover businesses offering sea outings. It's a great opportunity to come back and explore the beautiful marine life of the Côte Vermeille (boat tours, scuba diving, fishing—take your pick). More info here.
  4. Be sure to stop at the end of the dock to see the fishermen, who will be happy to offer you their fresh catch of the day.
  5. Exiting the port, cross the Massane River via the metal bridge that leads you to the seafront.
  6. After a few dozen meters, you will pass through a shared promenade area. Pedestrians stay on the paved walkway, while cyclists use the dirt path on the left. Please respect these guidelines for the best experience.
  7. The promenade then allows you to enjoy a 1.5 km walk with views of the seafront on your right, and on the left, the Argeles Photo Nature exhibition. Each year, a new theme is featured. In 2020, the exhibition is called "Bears and Co."
  8. Continue your stroll leisurely until you reach the Charles Trenet esplanade. Fountains will help you cool off and will delight children. On your left, the houses give way to the beachside shops, bars, and restaurants.
  9. Further along, you will find a play area for children (payable) and an adult area (Casino) before finishing the walk on the cobbled streets. If you wish, you can also continue walking under the pine trees ahead of you, all the way to the Camping le Roussillonais. However, this path may be more difficult for people with limited mobility due to the sandy surface.

For the return, retrace your steps while respecting the distancing zones between cyclists and pedestrians.
